Civil Air Patrol to Honor Fallen Service Members with 40,000 Holiday Wreaths at Long Island National Cemetery 

MELVILLE, NY – Members from the Long Island Senior Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), as part of the national Wreaths Across America program, will lay 40,000 Holiday Wreaths on the graves of fallen service members at Long Island National Cemetery in Melville, NY on Saturday December 15th, beginning at 12 noon. 

Wreaths Across America, a non profit 501-c3 organization, was formed as an extension of the Arlington Wreath Project in 1992 with the laying of 5,000 wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery. By last year, the Civil Air Patrol placed over 200,000 wreaths at more than 300 cemeteries in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and 24 over seas cemeteries.  Wreaths are provided through both private and corporate donations to local Civil Air Patrol squadrons. The Long Island Senior Squadron is still accepting wreath sponsorships. Interested parties should make checks payable to “Wreaths Across America” and mailed to: Major Maurice “Mo” Cosentino, 26 Caffrey Avenue, Bethpage, NY 11714. Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force, is a Congressionally chartered non-profit organization with almost 65,000 members nationwide. CAP performs 95 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. Its volunteers also perform Homeland Security, disaster relief, and counter-drug missions at the request of federal, state, and local agencies. CAP Members take a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to the 25,000 young people currently in CAP cadet programs. CAP has been performing Missions for America since December 1, 1941.
